EXPERIENCE BIG CANOE

A Community Inspired by Nature’s Magnificence

Since the beginning, we’ve thoughtfully framed our homes, amenities, and community around the beauty and tranquility of the North Georgia mountains.

History

A Legacy Dedicated To Mountain Living

Before Big Canoe was a bustling mountain community, it was home to Native American tribes, and largely inhabited by the Cherokee Indians. As European settlers arrived in the 19th century, the region began to transform, reflecting an Appalachian way of life for its new residents. To this day, Big Canoe has kept its name, in honor of Cherokee legends and the rich history in the region.

It wasn’t until the early 1970s that Big Canoe was viewed as a “hidden gem” to local developers who wanted to build a rustic yet upscale mountain retreat with modern amenities. Now, the community has grown to foster thousands of residences and welcome many vacationers. Big Canoe is so special to some families that it becomes an integral part of their family legacy, and new generations return to honor these traditions.

What makes Big Canoe different from other mountain communities, though, is the down-to-earth and relaxed approach in our neighborhood. In our eyes, luxury is the freedom to step out on your porch on a normal Tuesday morning and breathe in crisp mountain air, or the simple joys of hiking with your family in undisturbed, peaceful nature. In other words, the luxury that Big Canoe offers comes in the form of experience, not showiness.

At Big Canoe, our unchanging mission has stood strong since the beginning: Creating a community that feels like an escape and is a place where families truly love where they live.

TODAY’S Developers

Building a Community in Nature’s Honor

Inspired by the seven mountains that surround tranquil lakes, canopies of trees, and sunlit hilltops, Big Canoe was originally developed in 1972 by renown developer Tom Cousins, of Cousins Properties in Atlanta, along with Sea Pines Corporation of Hilton Head, South Carolina. In awe of this majestic part of the North Georgia mountain range, these developers set out to build a residence and recreational community that made the area’s luxurious nature and beauty accessible to all.

Treasured for more than 50 years, our community continues to grow in size and popularity. Today’s developers are committed to preserving Big Canoe’s legacy and are honoring the vision of its predecessors by expanding neighborhoods, bringing modern conveniences to the area, and enhancing the way residents and visitors of all generations experience Big Canoe.
